About Us

Commons & Commons LLP has served clients in the Philadelphia area for four decades.

Hal Commons started the firm in 1973, and was joined by his wife, Kitty, after she became an attorney in 1984 (Kitty retired from the practice in 2017).  One of their sons, Pete, joined the firm in 2005.  Pete's wife, Katie, joined the firm as a paralegal in 2007 and then as an attorney in 2014.  

Our firm's reputation is a testament to our attentive service to client needs, whether simple or complex, and whether the client is an individual, family or organization.

Peter T. Commons

Pete represents individuals and families in estate planning, assists individuals and institutions with real estate transactions, and counsels fiduciaries of estates, trusts and institutions.

Pete represents numerous independent schools as general counsel.  He also represents heads of independent schools as personal counsel, negotiating employment agreements and advising on leadership issues.  In this capacity, Pete has worked with dozens of heads of school across the country, and lectured to groups of heads of school and aspiring heads of school.  

Pete earned his law degree from Temple University's Beasley School of Law (J.D. 2005), and graduated from Middlebury College (B.A. 2001).

Pete volunteers on various non-profit boards including the Mount Airy Business Improvement District, the Germantown Relief Society, Awbury Arboretum, and the Miquon School. 

Pete is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania and New York.

Katie

Katie

KATHERINE B. COMMONS

Katie practices in the areas of estate planning, estate and trust administration and tax matters, providing estate and organizational planning and tax advice to individuals, families, fiduciaries and non-profit organizations.

Prior to joining the firm, Katie was a Registered Nurse, working in the field of oncology.

Katie earned her law degree from Temple University's Beasley School of Law (J.D. 2014, Summa Cum Laude, Order of the Coif), where she attained the highest grade point average in her graduating class (receiving the Albert L. Bricklin graduation award).  She was also awarded Beasley, Theodore Flowers, Arthur Pomerantz, Louis Matkoff and Joseph W. Marshall merit scholarships and Joseph W. Price, III, and TASA graduation awards for achievement in the fields of taxation and evidence. She is a member of the Rubin Public Interest Law Honor Society. Katie also graduated from University of Pennsylvania's School of Nursing (B.S.N. 2004, Summa Cum Laude) and from Middlebury College (B.A. 2001, High Honors, Magna Cum Laude).  

Katie is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

 

 Hal

HAROLD T. COMMONS, JR.

Hal started Commons & Commons as a sole practitioner in 1973 after serving as partner of a major Philadelphia law firm. He has been practicing law on behalf of families and organizations in the community for over 40 years, with a focus on estate planning and administration of estates and trusts. 

Hal earned his law degree from Cornell University Law School (J.D. 1968), where he was Managing Editor of the Cornell Law Review. He is also a graduate of Wheaton College (B.A. 1962). 

Hal is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania and New York, and before the United States Supreme Court.

 

Karen

KAREN L. WOLFE

Karen practices in the areas of estate planning and administration, executive compensation and general administration issues for independent schools, advises non-profits, and assists individuals with tax and real estate matters. She also assists clients with litigation surrounding employment and trust and probate matters.

Karen earned her law degree from Temple University's Beasley School of Law (J.D. 1999), where she was the recipient of the Nat N. Wolfsohn Memorial Award in Real Property.  Karen also graduated from Stockton University (B.A. 1995), as a Charles C. Reynolds Journalism Scholarship recipient. 

Prior to joining the Commons & Commons, Karen was a managing attorney at the Defenders’ Association of Philadelphia, where she was a litigator and supervising attorney.  She is currently a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Probate and Trust Section’s Rules Committee, as well as a member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Life Planning Network, a national association of professionals focusing on creating a positive experience in the second half of life.

Karen is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania.
